About Josephine

Hello there!

Welcome to my page! My name is Josephine Esposto and I am a PhD student in the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at Trent University, specializing in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. My research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of TDP-43, a protein implicated in neurodegenerative diseases like ALS, and its role in cellular processes. Using Dictyostelium discoideum as a model organism, we are currently exploring how metal imbalances contribute to protein aggregation and protein homeostasis at the cellular level.
With a strong background in both academic research and industry, I have successfully published several scientific papers, presented my work at numerous international conferences, and mentored students across various STEM fields. Prior to my PhD studies, I worked as an R&D Chemist at Excir Works Corp., collaborating with The Royal Mint on green chemical leaching technologies for metal extraction, and held Lab Scientist roles in public health laboratories. Passionate about equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM, I am actively involved in initiatives such as OTT-WIC and the Canadian Society for Molecular Biosciences (CSMB), encouraging and initiating inclusive environments for scientists.

I'd love to chat more about your passions in STEM, and I am always eager to connect with others who share this enthusiasm. Whether through collaborative projects, outreach initiatives, or meaningful discussions, I believe that working together can inspire innovation and drive scientific progress. If you’re interested in partnering or chatting about ways to promote STEM, I’d love to hear from you :).
